About ACCA

African Children’s Charity of Arizona (ACCA), registered under the name African Children’s Charities, is a nonprofit charitable organization run by a Board of Directors and a Ugandan advisor, Dr. Moe Mukiibi, who was born and raised in the outskirts of Kampala, Uganda and now lives in the United States.

In 2006, after visiting his family in Uganda, Moe returned to share stories of seeing so many children on the streets, children orphaned because their parents and family members had died from AIDS or other causes. When Moe said he wanted to help these orphaned children, a group of his friends expressed the desire to also help feed and care for orphans in the community where Mo had grown up. This was the foundation upon which ACC was founded. In December of 2007, ACCA was incorporated in Arizona, and in March of 2008, it received federal tax exemption under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue code.

From the first four children supported with food and shelter and cared for by a kindly “grandmother” in the village, today ACCA is supporting 15 children, four who have tested HIV positive and one who has AIDS. The support now includes food, shelter, clothing, education, medical care and all needed medicines. “Grandma” and “Auntie”, continue to provide daily care for the children when they are not in school, along with some villagers who are contributing time and resources to the ACCA-Uganda success.

The objective of ACCA is to offer these children, and additional children as funds become available, a safe and secure home environment where they are loved and cared for, and receive the schooling and health benefits that promote self-worth and spiritual growth and encourages each child to grow into a productive and successful citizen of Uganda, who will in turn help others.

With our commitment to fiscally-conservative growth, we are confident that ACCA can care for each child through secondary (high) school. With motivation and encouragement, we look forward to seeing many of the children receive scholarships to attend college.

ACCA is funded by donations from individuals who desire to help support these children. Any payments processed through PayPal will go directly toward supporting the children.

OUR MISSION

The Problem

In Uganda, a central African country of about 33,000,000 people, there are 3 million orphaned, homeless children. The country has fertile land, mineral and water resources yet ruinous dictators and the worst AIDS outbreak in Africa have fractured the society and brought the country to its knees. The children, being the most vulnerable, are destined to suffer the most. For many of these youngsters, the future is no further away than the next bite of food they can find. Scavenging for something to eat or wear from the dumps becomes essential for their survival. Daily they face the risk of death from starvation, contaminated water, AIDS, malaria, and many other diseases without any medical care. But there is hope. With your help we can make a difference, one precious child at a time.

Our Model

Children deserve to have a home – a home that provides a safe, loving environment where they can be cared for and nurtured in an extended family setting. This is what African Children’s Charity of Arizona (ACCA) provides to every child under our care.

Two dedicated care givers, ”Grandmother” and “Auntie,” look after the physical and emotional welfare of the children and help each child to become a member of the family. The children are educated in a Christian boarding school and are encouraged to take advantage of educational and personal experiences to become solid citizens who will give back to their community and country.

More than 92 cents of every dollar received goes directly to caring for the children – we don’t waste a penny! Our only expense is for the salaries paid to our Ugandan director, and the ladies, Grandmother and Auntie, who care for the children.

Our Mission

ACCA is committed to rescuing orphans and providing each child physical, emotional, and spiritual love and support, safety and physical well-being, medical care, education through high school, and guidance to become a productive member of Ugandan society.

Volunteering at African Children's Charities of Uganda

Volunteer opportunities at African Children’s Charities of Arizona are extremely varied and involvement can range from a few days to a few weeks or anything in between. All that we ask is that volunteers have an interest and desire in supporting the vulnerable children and their families that are at the heart of our work. You will not only gain experience working with a small NGO but also have an exciting time experiencing life in Kampala and seeing the highlights of Uganda – the ‘Pearl of Africa’.

Our goal is to create a well-rounded experience of what it’s like to work for a small organisation on the frontlines of development work. Each person has a different skill set and because of our small size we try and utilise every volunteer who walks through the door to their full potential. The skills you’ve acquired from other jobs, volunteer placements, life experiences, and educational achievements can all be used here in some capacity.
